After a scarcity of butterflies during much of the summer, I’ve appreciated seeing several in the backyard lately. Our Golden Asters (Chrysopsis villosa) are in full bloom and have attracted several visitors.

5 & 6. Gray Hairstreak (Strymon melinus)
These plants have proven to be drought tolerant this summer. Even after pruning them in early summer, they’re still 3-4 ft. tall. The abundant, showy yellow blooms add welcome color to the backyard.
I enjoy having flowers in the backyard. I also like seeing butterflies, and I feel good knowing that the plants support them. It’s a win-win situation.
What late-season butterflies are you seeing?
Beautiful.
Thanks, Sara.
Beautiful shots as always! It’s nice to see such a variety of winged visitors.
Judy, hope you, too, are enjoying lots of winged visitors.
How beautiful your backyard. Send me some butterflies and asters!
Evelyn, I don’t seem to have much luck with telling butterflies where to go or what to do. However, I’d be glad to give you some aster seeds. (:-)
