What a treat! I am seeing Buckeye butterflies (Junonia coenia) in the backyard for the first time. I think they are quite attractive with their colorful markings and distinctive “eyes”. They, along with several other smaller butterflies, are feeding on Mist Flower, the subject of last week’s post. At times it’s a butterfly frenzy and great fun to watch.
you just keep getting great butterfly photos
like this one, carter
Thanks, Carter. Coming from one of my favorite photographers, this is a real compliment.
I am always as amazed that you can spot the differences in all the patterns as the fact that I am
always seeing ones that I don’t find pictured in the Audibon Guide to Butterflies, esp one recently that
makes me question the defining visual difference between butterflies and moths.
Beth, thanks for your comment. Identification is certainly a challenge for me and I’m still learning. Practice helps and I’m also trying to remember that enjoyment come first; identification comes second. Do think that having a name helps me connect in a different way.
We’ve seen these too – at our Stiff Goldenrod. Love your picture!
Thanks for your comment, Eve. Glad to know they are visiting you as well.
